Resume job match checklist

How well does your resume match the job? A practical checklist

Evaluate the role before rewriting: essential qualifications, proven experience, scope of responsibilities and formatting details.

What to know before you start

A “resume match percentage” looks simple, but it cannot prove whether you meet an employer’s qualifications. A better review asks whether you satisfy the non-negotiable requirements and whether a recruiter can easily locate the evidence in your application.

Check the non-negotiables first

Confirm licenses, certifications, work eligibility, location restrictions and minimum required experience. A high keyword overlap does not compensate for an unmet essential condition.

Review experience in context

Compare the type and scale of responsibility: leading a small internal project is not identical to owning a global production platform. Distinguish what you directly accomplished from what the broader team delivered.

Prioritize the top five examples

Choose your strongest evidence for the five most relevant requirements. Put the most compelling supported qualifications in your summary and early experience bullets, without burying other important history.

Know when not to force a match

Some roles are realistic stretches; others require a qualification you do not have. Note the difference. Apply based on your own judgment instead of modifying your resume to imply qualifications you cannot substantiate.

A useful process

Three steps to a better application

01

Screen requirements

Confirm mandatory qualifications and eligibility.

02

Score evidence qualitatively

For each key requirement mark: strong evidence, partial evidence or no evidence.

03

Tailor selectively

Use CareerPilot to revise language where real evidence exists.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a 90% match score necessarily good?

No. The calculation method varies and a single mandatory qualification may outweigh keyword overlap.

Can I apply when not every preferred skill appears on my resume?

Yes, depending on the position. Preferred requirements differ from mandatory qualifications.

How can I improve a job match without lying?

Choose clearer examples, explain results and use accurate job-specific language.
