What to know before you start
Government applications are not interchangeable with private-sector submissions. The vacancy announcement and the official hiring portal are the primary sources for document, screening-question and eligibility rules. CareerPilot can help organize experience and tailor an application draft, but it is not an official USAJOBS or Government of Canada service.
United States: USAJOBS federal resume requirements
As of October 2026, USAJOBS limits federal resumes to two pages. Focus on the qualifications and specialized experience specified in the announcement. Include the work history details requested by the agency, such as dates and hours worked when relevant. Do not use old advice recommending four- to six-page USAJOBS resumes.
Canada: GC Jobs resumes and screening questions
Government of Canada guidance recommends a simple, unformatted resume for content pasted into GC Jobs. Screening questions are often central to demonstrating essential qualifications: describe what you personally did, when and where, and provide concrete results. Do not rely on “see my resume” instead of a complete answer.
Example: demonstrate an essential criterion
Criterion: “Experience coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders.” Instead of “Strong project manager,” describe one real project, the stakeholders involved, your responsibilities, the period and the measurable or observable result. The aim is clear evidence against the requirement.
Before you submit
Check language requirements, location restrictions, eligibility, required supporting documents and the deadline on the official posting. Confirm any word or page limits in the announcement itself. Treat AI-generated wording as a draft that must be verified.
